Ok I know what you’re thinking, “another bloody steak sandwich recipe?” Like the Internet doesn’t already have enough of those. Well you know what? Sometimes you need to surrender to your cravings and a steak sarnie is the perfect midweek meal, Sunday snack and hangover cure. I could go on and on but I’ll leave it there for now. What sets this recipe apart from the other billion you ask? Well it would have to be the PERFECT caramelised onion and tomato relish. This relish is so good you don’t even have to worry about getting the sauce bottle out of the pantry (or the fridge if you’re one of those people). Big call right? You and I both know there’s only one way to find out if it really is the perfect relish… yep make it.
The first step is to make sure you have cold beer, yes, just like a BBQ, a steak sandwich is nothing without a cold beer. It doesn’t matter if you are drinking mid-week just remember to mention the steak sandwich if anyone gives you ‘the look’. The second step, well if you are going to serve it with chips… branch out! Do some sweet potato chips or something… normal chips are boring. Third and final step, follow the instructions below. Happy eating.
Steak Sarnie with Perfect Relish.
What you’ll need:
- good steak- Rump or skirt steak are good budget options but if you want tender go the eye fillet (tell your bank account I’m sorry).
- crusty loaf of bread, I used a tiger loaf here and it was awesome. Sourdough is another good option.
- handful of rocket, washed and dried.
- 1 x tomato sliced (for the sandwich).
- 1 x tomato, diced (for the relish).
- 1 splash of oil.
- 1 x onion (add more if you are feeding an army).
- 1/2 roasted capsicum (if you are doing the mid-week version you can buy these in a jar… it’s not cheating).
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar.
- 1 teaspoon cumin.
- pinch of salt.
- splash of water.
Now what?
- Start with the relish, place a frying pan on a medium low heat, add a splash of oil, the onions and the brown sugar and cook for 10 minutes.
- Add a splash of water, diced tomato, cumin, salt and continue to cook on a low heat for 10 minutes.
- Add the capsicum and cook for another 5 minutes.
- While waiting to start step 3 this is when you cook your steak. You know the drill, 3-4 minutes each side over a high heat for medium rare (depending on thickness).
- Fry the bread on a griddle pan to make it look fancy (or just use a toaster)
- Once everything is ready, assemble, drink and enjoy.
